H Project Performing Arts Association presents the Double Vision Youth Jazz Workshop + Jam Session, an interactive afternoon designed for young jazz musicians who want to learn how a real jazz jam session works.
Led by members of Double Vision Jazz Ensemble — Hank Hehmsoth, John Mills, Utah Hamrick, and Aaron Easley — this workshop gives students a supportive place to listen, ask questions, learn jam-session etiquette, and build confidence playing with others.
Students will explore how musicians communicate in a jazz setting: listening, taking turns, following forms, interacting with a rhythm section, and finding their place inside a live ensemble. The event is especially designed for high school jazz students, youth jazz orchestra members, young improvisers, parents, educators, and anyone interested in Austin’s youth jazz community.
Students are encouraged to bring their instruments.
House Band / Clinicians
Double Vision Jazz Ensemble is a contemporary jazz quartet co-led by composers and improvisers Hank Hehmsoth (piano) and John Mills (saxophone and flute). Rooted in a musical relationship that stretches back roughly half a century, Hehmsoth and Mills bring a rare depth of shared language to the stage.
Hank Hehmsoth — piano / Nord Stage 4
John Mills — saxophone / woodwinds
Utah Hamrick — bass
Aaron Easley — drums
About the workshop
This workshop is built around a simple idea: a jam session should feel welcoming, not intimidating.
Students will learn practical concepts such as:
How to listen before playing
How to enter and exit a tune
How to follow the form
How to interact with a rhythm section
How to support soloists
How to prepare for a public jam session
The goal is to help young musicians feel more comfortable participating in Austin’s live jazz community.
