3 recent research projects of jazz and music history.

1.    “Bill Cosby on Miles Davis”

A never aired interview with comedian Bill Cosby from 1986.

Cosby, who had one of the closest relationships with jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, recalls his high school years, where everybody was listening to Miles Davis, collected all his records, dressed like him, revered his band, followed his every move, and attended every Miles Davis concert.

In my role as a Research Fellow for the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, I discovered a small cassette among 60 boxes of uncatalogued Dan Morgenstern memorabilia at the Institute. “There was this cassette marked "Cosby". After playing a portion of it, I knew this was an important historical contribution to the legacy of Miles Davis.”

“I withheld this release for a while, due to the trouble Cosby has. But back in 1986, Cosby was a tv star, and hosted Miles Davis’ wedding to Cicely Tyson at his home in Beverly Hills. Cosby explains in depth the mystique Davis has, and his enormous impact as an innovative creator.”

Loren Schoenberg, senior scholar of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, and keynote speaker at Texas State’s Eddie Durham Celebration, interviews jazz drummer Mel Lewis in radio broadcasts from 1989.
