Hank Hehmsoth, an award-winning jazz pianist, composer, and educator, founded HPPAA to expand the boundaries of jazz, world music, and contemporary art music. His innovative compositions, such as Chernobyl Cha Cha and The Zone, blend musical expression with visual art, creating a unique multidimensional experience. With accolades such as the MacDowell Fellowship and NEA Jazz Composition Fellowship, Hehmsoth brings an unmatched dedication to advancing music through innovation, education, and collaboration. As a research scholar, his preservation efforts, including the rediscovery of "Just Jazz" broadcasts, align with HPPAA’s mission to inspire and connect audiences through the power of music.

John Mills, Composer and Saxophonist

John Mills

Collaborator and Innovator
John Mills, an acclaimed composer, arranger, and saxophonist, is a vital part of HPPAA’s mission to blend genres and foster musical innovation. His work spans collaborations with jazz icons like Maria Schneider and R&B legends such as Ray Charles, as well as orchestral arrangements for artists like David Byrne. Mills' original compositions and international masterclasses highlight his commitment to nurturing creativity and mentoring the next generation of musicians. His career aligns with HPPAA’s goal to honor jazz’s rich legacy while pushing its boundaries.

Dr. Jan Peterson Hockey

Secretary / Director
Dr. Jan Peterson Hockey is an educator, musician, and longtime advocate for creative music learning. Her work centers on elementary music education, with an emphasis on discovery-based learning, movement, hands-on instrumental experience, aural skill development, and helping young students understand music through sound, image, and physical expression.

Her background also includes private studio teaching, piano, and composition. As Secretary and Director of H Project Performing Arts Association, she brings deep experience in music education, classroom practice, and arts learning to HPPAA’s public programs, youth outreach, and educational initiatives.

Tom Clark

Director Emeritus and Scholar
With over 40 years of experience as a music professor and administrator, Thomas Clark embodies HPPAA’s mission to bridge creativity and scholarship. A respected composer, author, and arts administrator, Clark’s works have been performed globally and recorded on Centaur Records. His leadership in developing innovative programs like UNT’s New Music Performance Lab reflects HPPAA’s vision to connect diverse audiences through groundbreaking projects. His deep expertise enriches HPPAA’s efforts to reimagine music’s role in contemporary culture.
